In the early days of the search engines they would count every link that was pointing back to a website. Today the search engines have become much better at figuring out the relevancy and popularity of a website.

One of the common things that webmasters used to do was to have links in footers that would all count for backlinks or another spot is in the blogroll lists on blogs. Then what would happen is all of these links would be on every page of the website or on every post of the website thus as the website or blog got bigger that would make more backlinks.

Are Directories Still a Good Form of Link Building?

This question keeps arising and for me at the time of writing this the answer can be explained in this following article. The reason this question has been raised again is because Google has removed its recommendation to submit to directories from its webmasters guidelines.

However I don’t think this means that the search engine will stop taking directories links into account. It just feels that it doesn’t need to recommend this tactic anymore. This does sound a bit confusing and you have to ask why Google has removed this information, it more than likely that this is a small part of a bigger picture which Google is working on. Google is not likely to tell us what this is and as usual we will have to work it out for ourselves.

I do think however that there are changes going on in the search engine result pages I will describe a few of the most recent ones below. With some search terms more informational websites seems to be showing up as Google thinks a higher percentage of people may be looking for information on a subject rather than to be faced will a list of companies.

Although Pagerank is irrelevant when it comes to SEO it seems to be having an even more less of an impact these days.

For example, getting a link to your site that has anchor-text associated with it saying "click here" is one of the very worst links you can have. It's probably better not having a link at all if you can only get this type of link.

It's much better to have anchor-text that includes the name of your website, or at least text referring to something relevant to your sites content.

But of at least equal importance is WHERE the links point. Most people typically have the links pointing directly to their home page (also called the 'index' page). This is okay, however the search-engines seem to like seeing links to VARIOUS pages within your site. They see this as being a much more realistic picture of how other websites would link to you.

In effect the search-engines are asking "are these websites linking to something especially relevant to that particular page in this other website, or are these links simply articles or press-releases that have been pumped-out to fool us?".

It's a bit like Deep-Sea fishing. Rather than casting your line into a river and letting your line sit on the surface, you make sure the float allows the line to drop WAY down deep into the water. That's pretty much how you want to view your links. Direct them DEEP into your website.

Not only is this good for getting higher search-engine rankings, you'll also see improved retention from your readers and website visitors.

Why? Well, it's quite simple really. When somebody reads something that you have written on somebody else's website and they LIKE what they read, they will likely click the link and be taken to the same post or article within your website. So, they immediately feel comfortable reading what they've already been reading.

The graphics on your site will be new to them, and they may not LIKE them at all, but they are already comfortable on the site; they KNOW this is the site maintained by the person who wrote that great article on the other person's website.

Now that they are on your site, they already know some of your work, so they'll feel more inclined to read some of your other work, whether that is your blog-posts or your articles.

So, the more natural the balance of links into your website the better for the search-engines (and therefore your rankings) and the more you can get people directly to the page where the SAME article or post is within your site, the better it is for the reader.

Always remember what you are trying to achieve. You want rankings from the likes of Google, Yahoo and Ask so that you can be more easily found from a search-engine, but you really want PEOPLE to like what you provide in your website. Because of this rule, it is also wise to avoid link partners who do so on the pages that they link to you from. If anything looks fishy, it probably is.

CSS won’t give you many problems. If you are going to use CSS, it is best to link to it from another source. Create a separate CSS page and use the tag to work it into the head of your HTML. This method will keep your file size down considerably, and since you will probably be using the same CSS on several pages, decrease your bandwidth usage. Normally a large quantity of CSS within the document isn’t indicative of any suspicious behavior on the part of the linker. If you feel that you are, indeed, suffering from the fact that the site uses such an excessive proportion of CSS on the page itself, suggest to the webmaster that he/she may want to create an external CSS document and link to it in his/her header.

Check that you're still on the domain you clicked on a link to, and you haven't moved to another site or a subdomain. Determining link quality is an important skill as although no link to your site will have a negative effect on your ranking, a good link can be worth a thousand poor links and some links will have no benefit at all.

Some of the factors that affect link quality are:

A couple of years ago, getting ranked really well in the search engines was a pretty easy task. I'm talking rankings in the top 10 for almost any keyword phrase you wanted.

All it took was a little research and effort, and within about a month or so, you could find your website listed in the top 10 rankings for just about any term you could want.

But, times have changed and it's getting really difficult to get good rankings for all but the least used keyword phrases.

I know people are now teaching others to use what are called "long-tail" keyword phrases, but let's face it-- what good is it going to really do your website to be ranked #1 for a phrase like "why does my dog get fleas and how do I get rid of them?" if it's only searched for once a year?

Why The New Search Algorithms Came About...

It wasn't to long ago when you could simply trade links with other "like-minded" websites and webmasters, and this would really help your websites rankings.

Problem is-- so many people started using very poor linking scripts, and everyone's link directories all started looking the same. It got so bad in fact, that these scripts would even do automatic linkings between websites who were using the same linking script!

After you start getting 3 million websites all linking together, and linking to the exact same things and websites, well it can really kill the results in the search engines, so something had to change.

What Really Matters In Backlinks Today?

After much testing and research, what seems to make the biggest impact in your sites rankings today is what are called "One-Way" backlinks.

These are simply links that are pointing to your website without any returning links pointing back from your website to the other website.

Another very important thing about backlinking that seems to really help is making sure that the linked text pointing to your website DOES NOT always use the exact same keyword phrase for every backlink!

In other words, if your main keyword phrase you like to have pointing to your website from other websites is "dog behavior training", DO NOT use that keyword phrase all of the time, otherwise it can be looked on as spamming by the search engines.

It's better to use a 60%, 30%, 10% strategy for backlinked keyword phrases. For example, you might use "dog behavior training" 60% of the time, "dog obedience training" 30% of the time, and "stop dog chewing" only 10% of the time.

This way, you won't have a problem of being dropped from a search engines index for spamming reasons.

Summary: Today, it's best to have a combination of links pointing to your websites, with One-Way Backlinks being the most important.

PageRank is only one of numerous methods Google uses to determine a page's relevance or importance. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks not only at the sheer volume of votes; among 100 other aspects it also analyzes the page that casts the vote.

However, these aspects don't count, when PageRank is calculated. PageRank is based on incoming links, but not just on the number of them - relevance and quality are important (in terms of the PageRank of sites, which link to a given site). PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn)). That's the equation that calculates a page's PageRank. Not all links weight the same when it comes to PR. If you had a web page with a PR8 and had 1 link on it, the site linked to would get a fair amount of PR value.

But, if you had 100 links on that page, each individual link would only get a fraction of the value. Bad incoming links don't have impact on Page Rank. Ranking popularity considers site age, backlink relevancy and backlink duration. PageRank doesn't. Content is not taken into account when PageRank is calculated. PageRank does not rank web sites as a whole, but is determined for each page individually. Each inbound link is important to the overall total. Except banned sites, which don't count.

Backlinks are a fundamental part of internet marketing, and if you are not doing everything you can to increase them, you will struggle to get traffic to your website. A backlink is a link pointing back to your website from another website. You need to be doing something every day to increase your backlinks in order to boost your website rankings, so below I have laid out seven ways of getting free backlinks, plus two paid ways.

Free Backlinks

1. Article marketing. If you are reading this article on an article ezine, you will see a resource box at the bottom. This contains links to my websites. If you can write articles twice a week or more, and submit them to many directories, you will increase your backlinks rapidly.

2. Blogging. Setting up a blog is free and it's fun. Each time you post, provide a link to your website and then submit it to social bookmarking sites. This will get you several valuable backlinks to your blog and to your site every time you post. Search engines love blogs so do this as much as possible.

3. Blog Commenting. Search other people's blogs and post useful comments. This is only valid if you post in blogs that allow links back to your site. Also, do properly read the post and make genuine comments, otherwise you could be accused of spamming.

4. Forums. Spend time in online forums that are relevant to your business, and make sure you have a signature containing a hyperlinked keyword phrase to your website. Most forums posts stay online for a long time so this can give you backlinks for years. Of course, it's important that you get properly involved in forums, providing useful information and asking genuine questions. Spammers are spotted very quickly and you could be banned if you just use them purely for the backlinks.

5. Link exchange. Ask other website owners if you can trade links, by providing a link to their website on yours and vice versa. This is known as reciprocal linking, which is not quite as powerful as one-way linking, but is still worth while, especially if your link partner has a high page rank.

6. Press releases. Send out a press release every time you provide a new product or service, or have some interesting news. Press releases contain links to your website that can create traffic immediately and in future.

7. Write Testimonials. If you join a company that has just launched, and are asked to write a testimonial, do it. These will be used in their sales pages and stay around for a long time, giving you valuable traffic. Whenever you get the chance, offer to write testimonials for other people in exchange for a backlink.

Paid for backlinks

1. Purchase Ezine Ads. If you buy advertising in online ezines you will get a backlink to your site. Purchasing multiple ads will save money and time because you will only need one purchase to be in several ezines.

2. Purchase ads on blogs. You can offer to pay for a text link on someone else's blog, and if they have a regular readership this can give you huge exposure for your website as well as increased backlinks.

There is lots of search engine optimisation advice around on the net. Some of it very good and some of it seriously out dated. Submitting to human edited directories seems to receive quite mixed reviews and can lead many to misunderstand exactly how these directories can work to improve your online visibility and site performance.

First of all let me just define exactly what I mean when I say human powered directories. We all know what the major search engines are, Google, Yahoo and MSN etc. Directories are slightly different and contain site indexes in a slightly different way. The best examples of human powered directories are Yahoo! directory and DMOZ. Both list sites according to categories and both contain millions of indexed sites. There are many more directories but these are the two I would like to focus on as the rules for submitting to these will pretty much apply to all directories.

The first question to may be ask is, what benefit will I receive by submitting my site to various directory sites. Well I will answer that question first by telling you exactly what you are not going to get. First of all there is no point optimising you listing as the categories are placed in a random order sometimes alphabetically and other times based on Google PageRank. Also if your looking for traffic you are looking for it in the wrong place. There are millions of sites indexed and the chances of users deciding to scroll down categories instead of using a crawler search engine are slim, to say the least.

So no optimisation reasons and no traffic. Why use them then. Well there is a very good reason why you submit to directories. The first one is that as a rule most crawler search engines start their life at one of these large sites and if your webpage is listed there your site is guaranteed to be crawled. This helps as if your site is crawled via a link rather than a submission your site is more likely to be indexed.

The second reason for submitting your site is for those valuable inbound quality backlinks. A link from the directories is seen as a high quality high PR backlink and will go a long way in getting your site to the top of Google.

Before submitting to these large indexes you must ensure a few things. Make sure you have at least 6 to 7 pages of unique relevant information, also make sure any broken links on your site are fixed. An important thing to remember is to place your site in the most relevant category, remember sites are human edited and if it is in an inappropriate category the chances are it will not be listed. Submitting to directories can be time consuming but is vital to your search engine optimisation efforts.

This SEO strategy tries to capitalize on "current" search engine traffic. In other words, traffic related to something that's just happened or become popular suddenly.

Therefore, if you have a good volume of on-topic "stuff" on your site, you'll increase your odds of being found randomly for keyword phrases that your competition cannot possibly hope to rank for! Think about it, there is NO WAY for anyone to optimize a page for a term that has only become popular during the last 48 hours...

And now that you know about it, you can this to your advantage...

V. Combining These Strategies For Maximum Rankings:

So, what should you do to increase your traffic? Experiment with a combination of these 3 SEO strategies...

Here are some tips on how to increase your search engine traffic by blending a little bit of each of these strategies together:

1)Enhance & optimize your site by posting the right blend of relevant content, given your market's characteristics. Feeding the search engines "the right stuff" in the right way will increase your traffic, both from popular keyword phrases AND from long tail phrases.

2)Build as many quality inbound links as possible to generate permanent residual traffic from the links themselves. Links from "on topic" sites are best & high traffic sites that have content closely matching your own are ideal. Sites with similar audience profiles to yours are everywhere & some of them get THOUSANDS of visitors every day.

Furthermore, many webmasters will keep a link up once they create it. 80% of the time, your link will stay there FOREVER...The trick lies in locating the right sites & getting your link well placed in the top 1/3rd of a clean competition-free page that gets regular visitors. And here's why...

I. Traffic is "The Thing"

During the 1990s, the Internet was reported to be growing at 100% a year. And, the early online marketers figured out that traffic is VERY valuable...If a site's traffic increases by 30%, its earnings should increase by 30% too because:

Traffic means visitors & visitors mean potential customers & customers mean money.

In fact, traffic is SO valuable that Google has built a $20+BILLION company around selling PPC traffic to businesses around the world...

So, the real issue is how to generate some FREE traffic for yourself.

Well, THOUSANDS of traffic generation & search engine optimization (SEO) techniques exist & here are just 3 of them...Let's begin:

II. Strategy #1: Linking "By The Pound":

Some SEO professionals claim that thousands of inbound links are all a site needs to generate visitors. While they won't let it slip out publicly, they believe in a fairly simple formula:

Inbound link VOLUME = Traffic = Money.

They trace a causation chain between:

1)The sheer NUMBER of inbound links your site has pointing toward it.
2)The amount of traffic your site gets.
3)And your site's eventual CASH earnings.

The theory is that as a site gains a "critical mass" of inbound links, its traffic level increases, & its CASH earnings increase too...

They theorize that link VOLUME drives traffic 2 separate ways:

1) The traffic from higher search engine rankings &
2) More importantly, the traffic from the 1000s of links themselves.

Barring a major PPC or offline media campaign, you'll find that 95% of the really high traffic sites you encounter have TENS of THOUSANDS of inbound links pointing toward them...For evidence of this, next time you stumble over a high traffic site, try checking its inbound links in one of the free backlink tools like Yahoo Site Explorer ("siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com").

Look at what you see. I bet you see THOUSANDS of inbound links…with each link theoretically contributing a little sliver of traffic every day...some obviously more so than others...

While this is a VERY persuasive theory, it may be slightly incomplete. Let's look at 2 other schools of thought:

III. Strategy #2: Link QUALITY Is EVERYTHING:

If you've been marketing online for more than a few years, you probably remember the "Page Rank" mania that seemed to sweep the SEO world during 2004-2005.

Professional SEOs were convinced that getting 2 or 3 authority links from high Page Rank sites would lead to better search engine rankings & a lot more traffic. The Page Rank hysteria quickly subsided…But, the strategy still remains VERY valid:

Links from prominent sites often ARE incredible sources of free traffic...

Once placed, some links will send a continual stream of 5-100 targeted visitors to your site every day, seemingly forever...And the new visitors will start appearing in your log files within hours of the link going live...If they were physical items, links like these would be worth their weight in gold...

For example, imagine my site has 10,000 inbound links from tons of different websites all over the internet. But, your site has only 3 inbound links: links on the homepages of Google, Yahoo, & MSN. All of which get MILLIONS of visitors a day...

Who would get more traffic? YOU WOULD, definitely...For the same 2 reasons stated above:

1) Your site would see a MASSIVE boost in its search engine rankings given how much "authority" Yahoo, MSN, & Google give each other &
2) The traffic coming off those 3 links by themselves would be HUGE too...

Clearly, link quality is very important.

What is Fighting Link Exchange Spam

The black days of link exchange started when someone invented the strategy to automatically surf the net, find contact forms on the sites of potential link partners and send via these contact forms spam messages "I am webmaster... sites are relevant... let's swap links - it will help us both." These beggy emails terrorize all site owners and definitely junk a very good idea of exchanging links.

Imagine, I have around 30 sites under my control - it's not much these days - and to each of the sites via contact form I receive 2-10 link exchange spam messages. I don't even say that they are irrelevant (people who use these solutions don't have enough competence to think about relevancy). For more details www.greateducationonline.com What I say is that even the number of link exchange spam to my sites is shocking: 2-10 spam messages a day to my 30 sites, wow this is 60-300 spam messages daily! And all these messages whine and beg to exchange links.

In my place, would you be able to pay attention to all these messages? I am not! I have more important things to do. I just don't read them - these messages go to trash bin instantly.

I know it's a hard truth for those who try to build links this way, but hey - I'd better tell you the truth now, rather than let you waste your time, efforts and money on such a super low effective method of link exchange.

And one more myth busting for those who trust the myth that they can customize/personalize their email message and this will save them the destiny of all other "link spammers." Don't kid yourself. With the amount of messages that I got and managed to view (because I delete around 80-90% of these messages instantly) over the last 3-4 years I saw ONLY ONE GOOD MESSAGE which attracted my attention and resulted in swapping link. And that was a very good business proposition for a very good site.

So, out of hundreds of link exchange emails that I was getting daily over years only one resulted in link swap! Nice conversions, aren't they?

Surely I don't doubt the advantages of automatic link building. But let's be fair, most of automatic link building tools either don't give you quality links or do not create quality, SEO-wise link exchange directory or simply spam. No wonder that link exchange gained a bad stigma these days.

Still, there is a very wise link building alternative. And this alternative is pretty much automated and uses a very smart approach. It's not some magic pill that will give you tons of quality links within seconds. But you can check the concept and make your own decision.

So, the concept is pretty simple. We can suggest with very high probability that web sites which use special link building solutions are very apt to exchange links with quality, relevant sites. We can even find the pages where these sites want you to submit full details of your web sites as subject for links exchange. Surely if you go to this door with your 'milk', no one can give you 100% guarantee they need milk at the moment. But at least this is better than throwing the bottle through the window!

Not to sound blatant I would ask to compare the conversions of using special doors for link building. I was testing conversions from doing link exchange using automatic site submissions for link swap and got from 40% 'yes' replies within one week up to 80% (that was the highest record that I did not manage to break up to now). And now compare it with the link exchange spam emails conversions when 90% of your emails are instantly deleted and out of the rest 10% no one knows if they will produce any effect.
